In the 1990s, Kathy Haut wrote the position statement on lay spiritual direction that was affirmed by the priests of the diocese involved as spiritual directors in the Cursillo movement. The criteria established was that an individual had to have training in one of three spiritual direction programs in the diocese, have at least three Cursillo team experiences and/or have a master’s degree in theology with adult formation experience in a parish. Fr. Ron Ruth and the other priests involved in Cursillo in the central region affirmed the importance of a two year spiritual direction formation, a theological basis for understanding each of the talks on a weekend, and the ability to lead others in their spiritual journey and practice. With the scarcity of priests able to commit to a Cursillo weekend, the inclusion of deacons on Cursillo teams and the vast numbers of lay individuals who studied and implemented spiritual direction in their lives, the current model evolved.
During the 1990s and again since 2009 Kathy has developed the spiritual direction teams for the central region of the diocese, including ordained and laity on each team. The spacing of spiritual directors on weekends is now greater than two years since there are many instances where husbands and wives desired to be on the same team. Kathy, herself has served on 20 teams.
