Deacon Steve made his Cursillo Weekend in the Diocese of Raleigh while at Duke University in 1978. Cursillo was a life changing experience, orienting his life to the Gospel and the Catholic Church for the rest of his life.
He moved to Richmond later that year where he worked for Philip Morris R&D as a research chemist until retirement in 2010. He also just happened to married his Cursillo sponsor, Kathy in 1978. They have lived in Virginia ever since.
In Virginia they were active members of St. Augustine parish, members of the Folk Group, and the Parish Council until becoming members of Church of the Epiphany in 1985. They were among the founding members of St. Gabriel’s parish before returning to Epiphany in 2003.
Steve and Kathy graduated from the Spiritual Director’s Institute of Msgr. Chet Michael in 1999 and both served on the Marriage Commission of the Diocese.
In 1985, Steve was asked to be on his first Cursillo team in Richmond. Since then he served on many teams in both the capacity of a lay team member, liturgy coordinator, rector (twice) and lay spiritual director.
The fruits of piety, study, and action over the years and the profound change he saw in people participating in Cursillo weekends was a major consideration in his decision to begin discernment into the deaconate in 2008. He was ordained in 2012.
He has served since as head of the spiritual direction team on several Cursillo Weekends and as Spiritual Director for the CVCC. He encourages Cursillistas to experience Cursillo beyond their first weekend in the many role available serving on team.
