Joel made his Cursillo in February, 2007 at the Abbey, sitting at the table of St. Ignatius Loyola. He has been on team five times including as Rector in February 2016.

Joel retired in 2015 after 38 years of teaching and coaching, the last 36 at Collegiate School in Henrico County. Since retiring Joel has been an active volunteer at Shalom Farms and with Project Homes of Richmond.

Joel and his wife Becky attend St. Mary Catholic Church on Gayton Road in Henrico, where Joel completed the RCIA program in 1984. At St. Mary Joel has been a Eucharistic minister, a member of the Men's Prayer Group , and a committee member for Men's Retreat planning. Currently Joel is a member of the St. Paul's Prayer Group at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Chamberlayne Avenue.
